Awarded "Best Intersection of Arts, Politics and Powerpoint" - East Bay Express annual Best of the East Bay Edition, August 5, 2009

Two years ago, Oakland Graffiti muralist Estria Miyashiro was invited to participate in Pecha Kucha Night Honolulu, but was unable to attend. Since then, he has brought Pecha Kucha Night to Oakland and enlisted the help of EastSide Arts Alliance (ESAA) and Hard Knock Radio (HKR). Estria felt it was a great format for local visual artists to share their work informally with many different people outside of a gallery setting. Estria explains, "Pecha Kucha is a great way to expose your art to many professionals in other fields in one quick-fire burst."

ESAA and the EastSide Cultural Center is the official home of the bi-monthly Pecha Kucha Night Oakland. ESAA is known for presenting cultural events that connect art with politics, and Pecha Kucha Night Oakland is no different. Maisha Quint of ESAA relishes the opportunity to take Pecha Kucha to another level. "We are gonna flip the script on Pecha Kucha by presenting artists that are really saying something about the human condition and the state of the world. We know that Pecha Kucha started as a way for designers and architects to present their work and we respect that and will be honoring the original format. Our focus will be on designers and architects of social change."

Each Pecha Kucha Night Oakland has a theme, and Weyland Southon of Hard Knock Radio is usually responsible for coming up with something appropriate. For this edition, the choice was a no-brainer. We decided to curate an all-graffiti lineup to celebrate revolutionary artwork, in conjunction with the 3rd annual Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle.

Keeping with the tradition of the original Pecha Kucha Nights in Japan, each Artist will present 20 images and speak on each image for 20 seconds. Pecha Kucha Night Oakland is part of a global network of Pecha Kucha Nights that happen in over 500 cities worldwide.

Style Wars (1983)

Directed by Henry Chalfant & Tony Silver. 69 minutes

Some call it tagging, some call it writing, still others call it bombing--it's all graffiti. Whether it's art or not is another matter, but it's undeniably illegal. Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant's historic PBS documentary Style Wars tracks the rise and fall of subway graffiti in New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At the peak of its popularity, graffiti was as much a part of B-boy culture as rapping, scratching, and breaking. The filmmakers present a sympathetic, but well-rounded portrait of their subject through extensive interviews with taggers--notably Seen, Kase, and Dondi--art collectors, transit authorities, and even Mayor Ed Koch, who would eventually put the hammer down. Along the way, they documented the burgeoning breakdance scene, with a focus on the world-famous Rock Steady Crew. The soundtrack features selections from Grandmaster Flash, the Treacherous Three, and other tagger-approved icons of old-school hip-hop. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Bomb it! (2008)

Directed by Jonathan Reiss. 93 minutes

BOMB IT is the explosive new documentary from award-winning director Jon Reiss investigating the most subversive and controversial art form currently shaping international youth culture: graffiti.

Through interviews and guerilla footage of graffiti writers in action on 5 continents, BOMB IT tells the story of graffiti from its origins in prehistoric cave paintings thru its notorious explosion in New York City during the 70's and 80's, then follows the flames as they paint the globe. Featuring old school legends and current favorites such as Taki 183, Cornbread, Stay High 149, T-Kid, Cope 2, Zephyr, Revs, Os Gemeos, KET, Chino, Shepard Fairey, Revok, and Mear One. This cutting edge documentary tracks down today's most innovative and pervasive street artists as they battle for control over the urban visual landscape. You'll never look at public space the same way again.

BOMB IT has shot in Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tijuana, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, Berlin, Cape Town, São Paulo, and Tokyo. --from the website

The Campaign

LIFE is LIVING... is a national campaign that uses a new form of green spoken story telling- one that represents the changing perspectives on what it means to be environmentally just. We seek to inspire people to take the value they see in their LIFE and establish it powerfully as a new voice to define what it means to be logistically and psychologically included in the new, clean and green economies. The "Going Green Movement" is still largely perceived by those living in poor communities and communities of color as inaccessible or irrelevant. Capturing the living moments of people in these communities, we create a bridge of culturally relevant & personalized conversations. We see this as a method of increasing our communities' power to influence and benefit from the Green movement, as well as bringing LIFE to environmental injustices. The campaign includes a traveling environmental caucus & concert, an invitational Living Word Graffiti Battle, live action sports, and hands on Green building activities.

Mike Bam of Hawaii

Mike "Bam" Tyau has been one of my best friends since we were 18 (long time, don't ask). He was one of my best bombing partners because if either of us got the vibe, we would tell each other and get out of there, no questions asked. We would scope out a place, and sit in the bushes like ninjas for 45 minutes before we would hit a spot, just to be safe. Needless to say I never got caught with Mike.

When we were young, Mike was an inspiration to me to get better at my art. He could smoke me at painting, drawing, and airbrushing without even trying. He had that natural talent. I didn't have that, but his talent pushed me to work harder on my skills to catch up to his level. For that alone, I will always be indebted to him.

We still talk almost every day, and he's become a vital team member of our Estria Invitational Graffiti Battles. Mike is the embodiment of loyalty. He is the kind of guy whom everyone takes an instant liking to. He loves his wife, family and dog dearly, and is an inspiration to me as a person.

For the last three years, Mike has rediscovered his passion for art, and man is he back with a vengeance!

You can see Mike's work inside and out at 1:AM SF Gallery now until October 10, 2009.

    Queen Andrea of NYC

Andrea von Bujdoss AKA "Queen Andrea" is a native New Yorker who was raised in the vibrant Soho neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

Andrea's passion for urban art and graphic design surfaced at an early age. In the early 1990s, she began to learn graffiti history and developed important friendships and mentoring relationships with some of the most notable New York City old school graffiti artists, like Reas, Ket and Wane One.

Queen Andrea competed in the our New York battle this past May. She also designed our flyer for the Oakland finals.

    Visit her website superfreshdesign.com

These days, she is one of the most traditionally skilled female graffiti artists in the country, possessing an explosively creative style inspired by the excitement of the urban landscape. Her custom lettering portfolio has grown beyond graffiti and is a comprehensive collection of letter studies and design explorations. She has been featured in art shows, toy shows, magazines, books, fashion lines and brand collaborations.

Bounce of the SF Bay Area

Bounce is one of the most amazing young painters out there right now. He has great old english, calligraphy, and cholo handstyles. He can do lettering, graphic design, and he can draw and paint characters like nobody's business.

Bounce is true to his namesake. He travels and paints the planet, and I never know if he's on the west coast or east coast. He's also painted Central America with and without his Trust Your Struggle crew. He doesn't say much, and picks his words carefully. He's a cool guy, and someone I enjoy painting with.

    Wane One COD of NYC

Wane One is one of those big name writers from NYC, that if you're a writer, you'd have to be living in a cave to not have heard of him. He's been painting steadily for over 25 years, is a guest judge at Write For Gold in Europe every year, and lectures in various cities. He feels, "Blessed. It's been a great journey. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time." The truth is he's a super cool cat, and instantly likable.

"When we were starting out, it was important to know who had your back. Now we're older and we know who has our back, and who's backs we got. The networking is so important now, so I try to support the movement. It's all about longevity, hooking up with folks and pushing the culture forward."

"Guys are always asking me what they gotta do to get down with COD. It's not so much what you gotta do, it's that it takes time to know the personality behind the art."

They say your friends are a measure of you as a person. This line up of crews Wane reps speaks volumes on his skills as a writer, and his friendships. COD, FC, FBA, TC5, AOK, 156, IBM

apex san francisco style king graffiti

    Cekis of Chile

Cekis is a very humble guy. He doesn't toot his own horn at all, and is very approachable.

Santiago, Chile 1998. Cekis opened a graffiti store called Otra Vida. It moved twice, but with business partner, Grin, it found a permanent location, and significantly helped make the mural/graffiti movement larger. Larger as in one of the graffiti capitals of South America. Otra Vida gave young writers access to books and styles they could not find in their country. It became a gathering place for writers; an important role for an art form that depends on oral storytelling.

He was one of the 1st generation of writers of Chile. He bombed hard and painted many large-scale murals, earning him the respect as one of THE kings of Chile. He had a huge impact on the succeeding generation of writers. During Cekis' painting career he has seen Chile shift from a dictatorship with very few murals to a democracy with entire neighborhoods painted. Some would say Cekis helped shift the social consciousness of Santiago to accepting murals as part of the culture.

Since moving to NYC in '04 Cekis has been focusing on his career as an artist, without a care for becoming a king. Pretty humble for a guy who impacted an entire nation of writers.

Visit his art website ymicrew.com and see more of his work at flickr.com/photos/cekis
